Draw With Me
What do you need to unlock the magical powers of drawing? In the most basic sense, you need a pencil and a piece of paper. It does not have to be a special pencil. Being American i can only speak of my American experience, but in my childhood, number two pencils were always available often free of charge. Want a darker line? Press harder. Want a lighter line? Less pressure. Simple. The more important thing is how you see. Be wary of those who try to teach you how to draw, but would start with the tools. Having the proper considerations is vastly superior to any tool. You could use a crayon. On a slab of would. And make a pretty convincing rendition of the Mona Lisa.what then should you consider?
Proportions for one thing. Learn to measure how far one thing is from another.
Value and color and then difference between the two.
Also study shapes and size.
The difference between color of a thing and the value of that color is color is what it stars as. Add black or white, in a painting for example, or press harder or lighter with a pencil, crayon, or pen, and you get a different value. You change the tint, and tint is actually more important than color.
Other than tint, another important influence on color is.color harmony.
Put a light color next to a dark color and the first color will seem brighter, next to a darker color the light color will appear to be darker.
Learn to paint using shapes instead of lines. There is a lot to know, but for the moment all you need is something that leaves a mark, and something to leave a mark on.
For years my secret was a number two pencil, the one with a hardwood casing. Just a preference of mine. Some noted it scratched the paper more than it needed to, but i liked it. I liked the scratching. Next, i always had a ream of paper, this one was a preference over the old sketchbook. 1000 sheets of copier paper was more open than a sketchbook, and more volumeous, depending on the third thing i always had. A clipboard. With a pencil, a piece of paper, and a clip board, i could draw anywhere at any time, on command, on the spot, on the go. I wish i had discovered the clipboard a little sooner.
But this is 50 years of sketching speaking. Do what you want. It’ll all work out.
As long as you aren’t too critical of yourself. Don’t misunderstand me. Super dark pencils and varying shades off pencils are nice, and very effective. Vine charcoal is super dark and very expressive much like black ink.at the end of the day it matters not the tools you use, but how you use them . And then, it goes without saying. Pressing hard on a number two pencil leaves a waxy mark. Not graceful at all. Even then. A number two can only ever go so dark.
My ramblings on how easy it is to learn to draw. And how little it takes.
